Detox, Detoxifying, Detoxing, Detoxification. These terms generally mean “a process or period of time in which one abstains from or rids the body of toxic or unhealthy substances”. Uhmm…easier said than done of course!
As with all my blogs, I do my best to back up everything I write with scientific research through the links you have access to in the articles. I also base my writings, tips, and suggestions on personal experience and feedback I receive from readers.
Here are 5 easy and painless things you can do to begin your detox routine today!
1.Lemon water you say?
We’ve heard this so many times before, drinking a glass of warm water with freshly squeezed lemon in the morning can really give your day a head start . As a matter of fact, warm water alone can help immensely. Not only does it stimulate your metabolism from the onset, but it will help flush the digestive system and rehydrate the body from a long night of fasting. If you choose to add lemon, the Vitamin C will also give your immune system a little boost and the citric acid it contains can help flush out unwanted toxins accumulated in the body. In addition the citrus falvonoids contained in the lemon will further help the digestive system by helping with the assimilation of food.
This is surely one of the easiest things you can do for yourself in the am!
But wait, there is more!
2. The Superfood known as Chlorella !
You may have heard about Chlorella as being a chlorophyll rich, phyto-nutrient superfood. The benefits of chlorophyll are many, so I will link here for the scientific research as I rather provide practical tips than a lengthy scientific article!
Just a couple of things I cannot ignore!
This truly amazing single-celled algae that grows in fresh water, helps detoxify heavy metals from the body through the process of chelation, by attracting and binding the impurities and then flushing them out of our systems.
Chlorella is widely known for its natural detoxification abilities. When chlorella is ingested, its natural action will bind it to lingering heavy metals, chemicals and pesticides found in your digestive tract, which is your body’s pathway to your bloodstream. This action avoids these harmful toxins from reaching your body’s cells. This is one of the reasons it is also taken by some cancer patients during chemotherapy.
Chlorella is uniquely designed to not bind to the minerals your body naturally needs to function optimally. As a matter of fact, it does not bind to beneficial minerals like calcium, magnesium, or zinc. It’s almost as if chlorella knows which metals belong in your body and which chemicals need to be removed.
Chlorella also contains Vitamin C and amino acids, and is shown to be a natural source of B-complex vitamins and iron. You can read a more in depth summary of all its benefits here. It also contains a high concentration of compounds that help block free radicals, which are defined as unstable molecules that can hurt and damage cells!
It basically helps protect our cells from from aging through its antioxidant power.
You can find Chlorella in different forms; for obvious reasons, the most commonly used form for smoothies is a powdered version which can be found in most health food stores.
Love this detox simple Chlorella smoothie!
This is absolutely one of my favourite guilt-free green smoothie recipes
1 cup of unsweetened almond milk ( can replace with coconut water or apple juice, add more liquids if desired)
1/4 of a teaspoon of powdered chlorella
1 medium sized green apple
1 thin slice of ginger / or 1/4 teaspoon of ground ginger
1 sprinkle of ground cinnamon
1 drop of superior grade pure peppermint essential oil /or 1 fresh mint leaf
Remember, the objective is to detox. The peppermint is added for taste, but mint and peppermint essential oil also have their health benefits of course! This smoothie will help improve blood circulation, stimulate the liver to remove toxins, and in doing so also improve the health of your skin. With the right daily choices it can also support weight loss.
NOTE: I started with 1/4 of a teaspoon because of chlorella’s strong aroma. You can always add more to taste.
Want to make it even quicker?
If you don’t have time to prepare a smoothie during the day, or are not particularly fond of smoothies or the taste of chlorella in general, there is always the option of Chlorella intake through a natural supplement. If you do opt for this version make sure it is a broken cell wall algae chlorella (this makes it easier for the chlorella to bind to the toxins in our bodies). It is very important to note that a high quality supplement should NOT contain fillers and additives such as magnesium stearate and microcrytsalline cellulose. Read your labels carefully before purchasing any supplement.
You can find natural supplements that do not contain any fillers, additives, or artificial colours and flavour here. You really won’t be disappointed in the quality of these supplements and the honesty and integrity of this company.
Behold the 3rd tip! You cannot do without this step…
3. You are going stop drinking coffee and replace it with a great cup of tea
The great thing about teas is that if you don’t like hot drinks, teas can be taken cold and they retain all of their nature derived health benefits! High quality Green or Oolong tea or both great choices, but if you can find a blend such as this one half the work is already done for you!
Did you know that both of these amazing teas are rich in polyphenols and antioxidants and help stimulate metabolism? Did you know that Oolong tea continues to work its magic up to 2 hours after drinking? You still have a caffeine intake of about 50-60 mg of per cup with these teas so 2-4 cups a day should be your limit.
Green tea benefits are widely known and western cultures particularly North American culture, have underestimated its virtues for far too long! And what about Oolong? Studies have found it also has anti-obesity effects!
If you must choose 1 one of tips in this article, this one is certainly the one YOU CANNOT do with out! DRINK MORE TEA!
But what do we do about our skin and hair?
4. Skin detox essentials
You know what?
If you follow the above suggestions for at least 3 weeks you will automatically notice your skin clear up and become more vibrant. However, if we can support our skin with just a couple of essential steps the results will be faster and more long lasting.
I recently posted this essential oil clearing moisturising blend on Instagram and received positive feedback from readers:
1 tablespoon of coconut oil (can use jojoba oil as well, as it helps balance sebum production)
Melt the coconut oil by placing it in a cup, in a pot of hot water (it’s important not to microwave!). Add the oils one at a time and mix. Apply onto skin with a gentle massage and allow time for the oils to be absorbed. Do not rinse! Follow this regiment every day for best results!
I have mixed skin and found that the jojoba oil worked better for me. “Jojoba oil is an extremely versatile oil and an ideal choice in helping skin cells reserve and retain moisture. It is very gentle and suits even the most sensitive skin types. It effectively penetrates the skin helping improve flexibility and elasticity, and it is also thanks to this virtue that it can help in the reduction of wrinkles. It has also been known to help lighten skin marks, scars and stretch marks. It has also proven useful for a variety of skin ailments.”
You can discover some superior quality essential oils here.
This is the ace up my sleeve!
Have you heard of Neem (azadirachta indica) ? This is truly an oil you have to discover!
It’s not by chance that its botanical name derives from the word “arishtha,” meaning “reliever of sickness” in Sanskrit!
Neem oil is perfect for people suffering from acne or other skin ailments. It can help fight bacteria and clear pimples from the skin. It contains a compound similar to aspirin, and therefore also helps reduce inflammation and redness of the derma.
This particular neem oil blend can be applied to damp hair and skin (without rinse) to help detox the derma and hair follicles of impurities. Applying it with a gentle massage will also stimulate blood circulation and help reduce wrinkles, as well as provide support for weak hair. I adore this blend as it contains natural citrus essential oils, adding a great scent to the product. The soap version is also available, and can also be used to wash hair! This natural soap bar also contains pure vegetable oils such as olive and coconut oils that will provide hydration as well.
The final step…
5. How much water do you actually drink every day?
Our bodies lose water constantly, and in order for our organs to function properly we need to replenish! Studies have found men need at least 3 litres of liquids a day, compared to women who need 2.2. Are you truly drinking this much? Taking in the right amount of liquids can help flush out toxins through our urine, as well as upkeep a healthy digestive system.
It’s NOT only about ridding the body of toxins
As the definition in the opening lines state, it’s not only about ridding the body of toxins, but also abstaining from intoxicating habits. Making the right choices in our everyday lives will ultimately help us detox from what is harmful to us, as well as lead us on a path that we feel confident about. It is about our life journey and the paths we choose to reach our life goals. Choose wisely dear readers….choose wisely.
